Joe Cocker war ein britischer Rock- und Blues-Sänger, der am 20. Mai 1944 in Sheffield, England geboren wurde und am 22. Dezember 2014 in Crawford, Colorado, USA verstarb. In Sheffield wuchs er mit seinem älteren Bruder auf und verließ mit 16 die Schule. Zunächst arbeitete er als Gasinstallateur, doch schon mit 15 Jahren begann seine musikalische Laufbahn in diversen lokalen Bands. Seine erste Band hieß "Vance Arnold and the Avengers", wo er unter dem Namen Vance Arnold auftrat und sogar einen Auftritt für die Rolling Stones eröffnete. Es folgte die Band "Big Blues". 1964 unterschrieb Cocker seinen ersten Vertrag bei Decca Records und veröffentlichte die Single "I’ll Cry Instead", ein Song von Lennon/McCartney. Nach fünf Jahren als Installateur gründete er "The Grease Band". Seinen ersten Erfolg in den britischen Charts hatte er 1968 mit dem Song "Marjorine", den er zusammen mit Chris Stainton geschrieben hatte. Ende 1968 gelang ihm der Durchbruch mit seiner Coverversion von "With a Little Help from My Friends" von den Beatles. Cocker kümmerte sich wenig um Finanzen, was dazu führte, dass er eine US-Tournee absolvieren musste, obwohl er sich von seiner Band getrennt hatte. Im August 1969 trat er auf dem Woodstock-Festival auf, wo seine Bühnenperformance zu seinem Markenzeichen wurde. Viele seiner weiteren Erfolge waren ebenfalls Coverversionen, darunter "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" und "The Letter". Leon Russell schrieb für Cocker den Hit "Delta Lady" und organisierte die "Mad Dogs & Englishmen"-Tournee. Anfang der 1970er Jahre hatte Cocker mit Suchtproblemen zu kämpfen, was seine Karriere beeinträchtigte. In den 1980er Jahren feierte Cocker ein Comeback mit Hits wie "When The Night Comes", "N’oubliez jamais" und "Unchain My Heart". Sein Duett mit Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong", wurde ein großer Erfolg. 1988 trat Cocker in der DDR auf. 2007 wurde er von Königin Elisabeth II. zum Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) ernannt. Sein letztes Konzert gab Cocker am 7. September 2013. Joe Cocker starb 2014 an Lungenkrebs.
Am 20. Mai 2015, dem 71. Geburtstag Joe Cockers, wurde diese Gedenktafel postum aufgestellt. Inschrift:
