Hamid Karzai ist ein afghanischer Politiker, der am 24. Dezember 1957 in Karz nahe Kandahar geboren wurde. Seine Herkunft aus dem Popalzai-Clan, einem Zweig der Durrani, verbindet ihn mit einer Dynastie afghanischer Könige, darunter Ahmad Schah Durrani. Sein Großvater hatte als Nationalratspräsident unter König Mohammed Zahir Schah gedient und auch sein Vater war Senator. Nach seinem Politikstudium in Indien Ende der 1970er Jahre unterstützte Karzai die Mudschaheddin gegen die sowjetische Intervention mit seinem Vermögen. In den 90ern kehrte er nach Afghanistan zurück, um die Anti-Sowjetischen Kräfte zu unterstützen und wurde Vize-Außenminister unter Burhānuddin Rabbāni. Obwohl er die Taliban anfangs unterstützte, distanzierte er sich später und gründete eine Gegenbewegung. Nach dem Mord an seinem Vater 1999 übernahm Karzai den Titel des Khans und wurde ein wichtiger Führer im Widerstand gegen die Taliban. Nach den Anschlägen vom 11. September 2001 arbeitete Karzai mit den USA und der Nordallianz zusammen, um das Taliban-Regime zu stürzen. Er wurde im Dezember 2001 zum Präsidenten der Interimsverwaltung ernannt und später durch die Loja Dschirga im Jahr 2002 im Amt bestätigt. Karzai überlebte mehrere Anschläge während seiner Amtszeit, darunter einen im September 2002 in Kandahar und einen weiteren im April 2008 in Kabul. Er gewann die Präsidentschaftswahlen im Oktober 2004. Im Jahr 2009 wurde er für eine zweite Amtszeit vereidigt, die jedoch von Vorwürfen der Wahlfälschung überschattet war. Nach dem Fall Kabuls an die Taliban im Jahr 2021 engagierte sich Karzai in einem Koordinierungsrat für die Übergabe des Landes. Trotz Reiseverbots blieb Karzai in Afghanistan und prangerte 2022 die Verbindung der Taliban mit Pakistan an. Karzai weilte im Sommer 2025 für diplomatische Gespräche in Deutschland.
