Fabian Cancellara ist ein ehemaliger Schweizer Radrennfahrer, der am 18. März 1981 in Wohlen bei Bern geboren wurde. Er spezialisierte sich auf Strassenradsport und zählte zu den erfolgreichsten Fahrern des frühen 21. Jahrhunderts. Cancellara war besonders stark im Einzelzeitfahren und bei schweren Eintagesrennen, darunter die bedeutenden Frühjahrsklassiker. Als Kind spielte Cancellara Fussball, bevor er 1993, mit zwölf Jahren, durch ein altes Rennrad seines Vaters zum Radsport kam. Er fuhr für den Verein Cyclo International und gewann fast alle seiner etwa zwei Dutzend Rennen pro Jahr. Nach der Schulzeit begann er eine Lehre als Elektromonteur, die er aber abbrach, um sich voll auf den Radsport zu konzentrieren. Sein Talent im Zeitfahren wurde früh erkannt, und er gewann 1998 und 1999 die Junioren-Weltmeisterschaft in dieser Disziplin. Seine Profikarriere begann 2001 beim Team Mapei, wo er behutsam aufgebaut wurde. Er gewann erste Rennen und etablierte sich als starker Zeitfahrer. Nach der Auflösung von Mapei wechselte Cancellara zu Fassa Bortolo, wo er hauptsächlich Helferdienste leistete. Ab 2006 fuhr er für das Team CSC und feierte seinen ersten grossen Klassiker-Sieg bei Paris–Roubaix. Im selben Jahr wurde er erstmals Weltmeister im Zeitfahren. Cancellara wiederholte diesen Erfolg 2007, 2009 und 2010, was ihn zum Rekordhalter machte. 2008 gewann er bei den Olympischen Spielen in Peking Gold im Einzelzeitfahren und Silber im Strassenrennen. Auch bei den Olympischen Sommerspielen 2016 in Rio de Janeiro war er im Zeitfahren siegreich. Trotz seiner Erfolge im Zeitfahren und bei Eintagesrennen war Cancellara aufgrund seiner Statur kein Spezialist für Grand Tours. Dennoch trug er bei der Tour de France insgesamt 29 Tage das Gelbe Trikot, länger als jeder andere Fahrer, der die Gesamtwertung nicht gewann. Seine Karriere war von zahlreichen Erfolgen, aber auch von Dopinganschuldigungen und Verdächtigungen begleitet, die er jedoch stets zurückwies. Fabian Cancellara beendete seine aktive Karriere im Jahr 2016 mit einem zweiten Olympiasieg.
