David Knopfler ist ein britischer Musiker, der am 27. Dezember 1952 in Glasgow geboren wurde. Bekannt wurde er als Mitbegründer der Rockband Dire Straits, zusammen mit seinem Bruder Mark Knopfler. In den Anfangstagen der Dire Straits spielte Knopfler Rhythmusgitarre auf den ersten beiden Alben, "Dire Straits" und "Communiqué". Allerdings verließ er die Band im Jahr 1980. Er fühlte sich durch Konflikte mit seinem Bruder in seiner Kreativität eingeschränkt und begann eine Solokarriere. Im Jahr 1983 veröffentlichte Knopfler sein erstes Soloalbum mit dem Titel "Release". Auf dem Album wirkten sein Bruder Mark sowie John Illsley von den Dire Straits mit. Sein zweites Album, "Behind the Lines", erschien 1984 und war von Synthesizerklängen geprägt. Ein Jahr später folgte "Cut the Wire". Knopfler schrieb auch den Titelsong "Double Dealing" für eine Folge der Krimireihe Tatort. 1988 kam sein Album "Lips against the Steel" heraus. In den 1990er Jahren erweiterte Knopfler seine Tätigkeiten und arbeitete als professioneller Entwickler von Websites. Er entwarf Internetauftritte für Unternehmen und Institutionen und beschäftigte sich mit Webdesign. Er erweiterte sein Angebot um E-Commerce, E-Publishing, HTML und Internet-Consulting. Knopfler blieb der Musik treu und veröffentlichte weitere Alben, darunter "Lifelines" (1991), "The Giver" (1993), "Small Mercies" (1995) und "Wishbones" (2001). Auf einigen Stücken von "Wishbones" und der CD "Ship of Dream" (2004) spielte Chris Rea mit. 2006 erschien sein zehntes Album "Songs for the Siren". David Knopfler nahm 2011 mit Harry Bogdanovs akustische Songs auf, die als Doppel-CD veröffentlicht wurden.
