Dan Shechtman ist Vater eines Kindes namens Yoav Shechtman (* 1980).
Dan Shechtman ist ein israelischer Physiker, der am 24. Januar 1941 in Tel Aviv, damals Völkerbundsmandat für Palästina, geboren wurde. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er in Ramat Gan und später in Petach Tikwa, unweit von Tel Aviv. Seine Großeltern waren Pioniere, die während der Zweiten Alija nach Palästina kamen und eine Druckerei gründeten. Shechtmans Interesse an der Wissenschaft wurde durch das Buch "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" von Jules Verne geweckt. Fasziniert von der Figur des Ingenieurs Cyrus Smith, der aus dem Nichts eine Zivilisation erschafft, träumte er davon, selbst Ingenieur zu werden. Er begann sein Studium der Ingenieur- und Materialwissenschaften am Technion in Haifa, wo er seinen Bachelor- und Masterabschluss erwarb und 1972 promovierte. Nach seiner Promotion zog Shechtman mit seiner Familie in die USA, wo er als NRC-Fellow in den Forschungslaboren der Wright-Patterson Air Force Base arbeitete. Dort forschte er drei Jahre lang über die Mikrostruktur und Eigenschaften von Titan-Aluminiden. 1975 kehrte er an das Institut für Materialwissenschaften der Technischen Universität Technion in Haifa zurück. Von 1981 bis 1983 forschte Shechtman an der Johns Hopkins University und entdeckte die ikosaedrische Phase, die den Grundstein für das Forschungsgebiet der Quasikristalle legte. Diese Entdeckung stieß zunächst auf Skepsis und Kritik. Linus Carl Pauling, ein etablierter Wissenschaftler, zweifelte an der Existenz von Quasikristallen. Trotz des anfänglichen Widerstands setzte Shechtman seine Arbeit fort. Später wurden Quasikristalle auch von anderen Forschern bestätigt. Für seine Entdeckung der Quasikristalle wurde Dan Shechtman 2011 mit dem Nobelpreis für Chemie ausgezeichnet. Shechtman ist mit Tzipora Shechtman verheiratet, einer Expertin für Psychotherapie.
