1960 veröffentlichte Franklin mit 18 Jahren ihre erste Popschallplatte. 1967 gelang ihr mit der Single "I never loved a man", die sich über eine Million mal verkaufte, der endgültige Durchbruch. Wenig später erschien ihr Hit "Respect", eine überarbeitete Fassung des Stücks von Otis Redding. Der Song wurde zur Hymne der afroamerikanischen US-Bevölkerung und gilt bis heute als bedeutender Soul-Klassiker.
In den folgenden Jahren festigte Franklin ihren Erfolg mit weiteren Nummer-1-Hits, die vielfach Gold und Platinstatus erreichten. Franklin arbeitete mit anderen bekannten Musikern wie George Michael, James Brown oder Elton John zusammen und wurde 1987 als erste Frau in die "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" aufgenommen. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere wurde Aretha Franklin mit Preisen überhäuft, allein 17 mal erhielt sie einen Grammy. Sie sang für die US-Präsidenten Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter und Bill Clinton, sowie auf der Beerdigung des ermordeten Bürgerrechtlers Martin Luther King. Bis heute gehört Franklin zu den Künstlern mit den weltweit am meisten verkauften Tonträgern.
