Sven Olof Joachim Palme war ein sozialdemokratischer schwedischer Politiker, Staatsmann und zweimaliger Ministerpräsident Schwedens. Er galt international als Stimme für Abrüstung und Verständigung und setzte sich für die Belange der Dritten Welt ein.
Palme wurde am 28. Februar 1986 nach einem Kinobesuch auf offener Straße im Zentrum Stockholms mit einer Schusswaffe ermordet. Die Polizei tappte lange im Dunkeln. Im Jahr 1989 wurde der Drogenabhängige Christer Pettersson für schuldig befunden, aber später wieder freigesprochen. Eine 2017 neu zusammengestellte Ermittlungsgruppe gab 2020 bekannt, dass Stig Engström wahrscheinlich der Täter gewesen sei. Da dieser schon verstorben war, wurden das Verfahren und weitere Ermittlungen eingestellt.
