On October 10 1970, Fiji gained independence from Great Britain. Britain had ruled Fiji for 96 years after having annexed the country on October 10 1874. From 1874 to 1968 the currency in Fiji was the Fijian pound. Sir Arthur Gordon was one of the early Governor Generals in Fiji, and rather than establish direct rule in all spheres he granted autonomy over local affairs to Fijis chiefs, though they were now forbidden to engage in tribal warfare. Gordon decided in 1878 to import indentured labourers from India to work on the sugarcane fields that had taken the place of the cotton plantations. The first 463 Indians arrived on 14 May 1879 - the first of some 61,000 that were to come before the scheme ended in 1916. The plan involved bringing the Indian workers to Fiji on a five-year contract, after which they could return to India at their own expense; if they chose to renew their contract for a second five-year term, they would be given the option of returning to India at the governments expense, or remaining in Fiji. The great majority chose to stay. During WW2, Fijians offered support to Great Britain as the Fiji Infantry Regiment was attached to New Zealand and Australian army units. These photographs presented here are a from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade collection. They were originally taken by the Fiji Times. Two of the images show Fijians dancing as part of the independence day celebrations. The other image has notable dignitaries who attended the independence day ceremonies including: Sir Keith Holyoake; Prince Charles; the Prime Minister of Tonga and the Prime Minister of Western Samoa. Prince Charles and Princess Anne accompanied the Queen and Prince Philip on the 1970 Royal Tour. But for a few days (19-22 March) they had a holiday in the Rotorua/Taupo area. Princess Anne enjoyed some horse-riding and sightseeing, while the Prince was treated to some of the finest fishing he had ever experienced, hosted by the Wildlife Service. They stayed at Moose Lodge, on the shores of Lake Rotoiti. On 20 March the Prince was taken to Waihaha on the west of Lake Taupo, and caught a 5lb trout trolling on the lake (see attached image of the party on the boat, and also the list of equipment that was provided for him to use). The Prince then fly-fished the lake and the Tongariro River. On the 21 March he fished the Wheao and then the Whirinaki, where he met with young conservationists from Tokoroa, Kawerau and Murupara. He finished the day fishing until 10pm at the Waihaha river mouth, having caught 7 rainbow trout from 4u00be to 6u00bd lbs. The local Conservator remarked I found him intensely interested in conservation and all aspects of the natural environment. Images from Wildlife Service file AFIM A1678/43b held in Auckland Regional Office These items are being presented by Archives New Zealand across our Twitter, Flickr and Youtube pages to coincide with the Royal Visit of 2014. Throughout the tour we will be showcasing records relating to previous Royal tours, dating back to early as 1869.
